MANHATTAN, 30 YEARS LATER

A hopeless lover of his hometown, director Woody Alien filmed Manhattan 30 years ago. As time passed, it became a grand tribute to New York City.

Realizada en 1979, Manhattan ofrece una de las secuencias más espectaculares del cine del siglo XX: una gran obertura de Nueva York y sus lugares representativos acompañada de Rapsodia en azul de George Gershwin.

Quienes vieron este film jamás olvidarán este homenaje a Manhattan, y los que aún no la han visto, la película es un referente obligado de Nueva York para construir su propio modelo de ciudad al visitarla. SI existe una metrópoli en constante cambio y que aglutina todas las culturas sin perder jamás su esencia, es definitivamente ésta. Como dice E. B. Thirty years ago the members of the love triangle played by Woody Alien, Diane Keaton and Mariel Hemingway left an impression throughout the city. They flit from restaurant to restaurant, museum to museum, take walks along the river, shop in delis and enjoy wise and no-less-tormented conversations about love and relationships. Alien and Keaton, engulfed in a delicious yet neurotic conversation, are surprised by the sunrise as they sit on the alreacty famous bench by the river with the monumental Queensboro Bridge as a backdrop.

QUEENSBORO BRIDGE

La imponente construcción, que este año celebra su primer centenario, ha sido escenario de varias películas, pero la que lo convirtió en un ¡cono fue precisamente la cinta Manhattan con la escena donde Dlane Keaton y Woddy Alien ven el amanecer sentados en una banca con el puente Iluminado. Actualmente el puente, que ha sido restaurado, continúa siendo uno de los paseos del viajero avezado. Para disfrutar de esta vista hay que tomar la 51th Street con la First Avenue, bajar hacia el río, descender por una larga escalera hasta el paseo junto al lado este para sentarse en una banca y gozar plácidamente de la vista.

Rizzoli Bookstore of New York, established in 1964, has long been a gathering spot for aficionados of art books, architecture, design, all kinds of magazines and literature in various languages. Its warm silence, with the tranquility of au oíd librar/ creates the perfect atmosphere for leafing through its volumes. Rizzoli wasn't at its present location (21 West 57th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues) when Woody Alien filmed a conversation there with his best friend, but at its oíd headquarters, with its beautiful stained-glass Windows, where a certain boutique named Henri Bendel currently resides (712 Fifth Avenue).

ROSE CENTER FOR EARTH AND SPACE

Esta construcción (antes el Hayden Planetarium) es parte del Museo Americano de Historia Natural que se encuentra frente al lado oeste de Central Park a la altura de la 79th Street. Después de 30 años de haber sido filmada la película Manhattan, en la actualidad el planetario tiene un nuevo aspecto. El edificio se reformó y adaptó de 1998 al año 2000 e inauguró sus modernas instalaciones que presentan un cubo de vidrio que contiene la esfera Hayden de grandes dimensiones. Es considerado uno de los planetarios más avanzados en cuanto a tecnología se refiere.

This construction (formerly Hayden Planetarium) is part of the American Museum of Natural History, at Central Park West and 79th Street. Thirty years after Manhattan the planetarium has a new look. The original building was demolished and reconstructed between 1997 and 2000. New, modern facilities consist of a glass cube containíng the enormous Hayden Sphere. It is considered one of the most technologically advanced planetariums out there.

Elaine Kaufman fundó en 1964 este lugar que pronto se convirtió en sitio para escritores que aún no publicaban. Elaine Kaufman founded this place in 1964, and ¡t quickly became a haunt for unpublished writers. During the rest- less 70s Elaine's was a popular nocturnal hangout because it stayed open into the wee hours. Musicians, politícians, journalists, artists and celebrities turned it into their favorite spot. Among the celebrities who've graced these legendary seats are actors Clint Eastwood, Michael Caín, writers iike Simone de Beauvoir and Norman Mailer, conductor Leonard Bernstein, rock star Mick Jagger and of course Woody Alien, who filmed a dinner scene there with Diane Keaton, Mariel Hemingway and Michael Murphy. What has lent this place its popularity ¡s without a doubt the explosive personality of its owner, who shows up each night at 8:30 to be on top of things as she has for the past 40 years.
